Hulsman’s career has placed him at the nexus between public policy and intellectual thought in the Washington community. Despite his conservative credentials, he is most proud of being known as a public policy intellectual able to work with both parties to solve problems. As such, he has been a member of the nonpartisan Council on Foreign Relations, where he has been asked to serve on a series of bipartisan task forces, providing advice to the executive branch and the Congress. Most importantly, under his leadership a Task Force on the Iranian nuclear crisis was convened, composed of senior level decision makers in both Germany and the United States. Within the American delegation, senior American Wilsonians, Realists, and Neo-Conservatives worked with him to establish a common transatlantic position on the Iranian crisis. That he was able to convince senior American decision makers with such disparate positions to work together to attempt to solve this most important policy question is illustrative both of his name recognition in the Washington community, and his leadership ability to achieve nonpartisan results.

America today faces a world more complicated than ever before, but both political parties have failed to envision a foreign policy that addresses our greatest threats. As a result, the United States risks lurching from crisis to crisis. The Bush administration's foreign policy strategy is bankrupt, but the Democrats are not providing any real alternatives.
Ethical Realism presents such an alternative, including both a new philosophical basis and a coherent set of detailed, practical and courageous policy recommendations. Anatol Lieven and John Hulsman, two distinguished policy experts from different political camps, have joined forces to write an impassioned manifesto that illuminates a new way forward.
